He succeeded his brother David Leslie-Melville, 8th Earl of Leven. He was Deputy Paymaster to the Forces in the Peninsula in 1809; he was a founding partner in the banking partnership Williams, Deacon, Labouchere, Thornton & Co; he was a Representative Peer for Scotland (Conservative) from 1865 to 1876. ==Family== He was the son of Alexander Leslie-Melville, 7th Earl of Leven. He married first Harriet Thornton, daughter of Samuel Thornton; they had children: *Alexander Leslie-Melville, 10th Earl of Leven, 9th Earl of Melville (1817–1889) *Alfred John Leslie-Melville, *Emily Maria Leslie-Melville, *Julia Louisa Leslie-Melville. He then married Sophia Thornton, daughter of Henry Thornton (brother of Samuel Thornton, above); they had children: * Florence Evelyn Leslie-Melville (died 31 May 1864) * Kathleen Mabel Leslie-Melville (died 8 January 1958) * Ronald Ruthven Leslie-Melville, 11th Earl of Leven, * Norman Leslie-Melville (5 February 1839 – 13 November 1923)〔http://thepeerage.com/p2114.htm#i21138〕 He was succeeded by Alexander Leslie-Melville, 10th Earl of Leven, 9th Earl of Melville (1817–1889).
